Interstellar Communications

10 01 2010

My article on interstellar communications has been published on the Project Icarus blog.

This is my first public article for Icarus. I joined the team a few weeks ago, working primarily on the communication systems.

Nice discussion too. Personally I like Claudio Maccone’s suggestion of a gravity focus transmitter and receiver set-up since the information transfer rate is potentially so high. Plus there might already be facilities there doing studies of the target system already – a Gravity Focus mission which doubles as a test-run of the starprobe automation might be ideal for the job.

Thanks Adam. Yes, Maccone’s suggestion is very powerful, and as you say we may already have something out at Sol’s focus anyway.

Maccone’s work on the Karhunen–Loève transform (KLT) is also fascinating. His Final Variance Theorem is a very neat trick for solving the transform under specific circumstances without having to do anywhere near as much computation as normal. As a side project, I’m building some Mathematica notebooks to implement his techniques.
